I really enjoyed this book. I am not a history buff, but I didn't have to be, because the author utilized his footnotes well. The Author's Note is worth reading; he helps you figure out the best way to decipher verbage and fills you in on the historical period, in general. He also has a wonderful ease about his writing; he has an articulate vocabulary, but doesn't try to brow-beat you with it.The openning line was brilliant and put me right on the battlefield with Isaac, the lead character. I found the first chapter a bit difficult to get into, because the characters did not develop quickly, but by chapter 2, I was into it for the story and had deciphered Bragdon's style. The lead character was strong, but vulnerable, and the lead female was more than just beautiful, she was determined and resilient in the face of disaster; both of which I liked. The author also has a flair for secondary characters, he defines them well and avoids being stereotypical. I wanted to know the villain better, his actions shocked me at times, and so I got mad at Bragdon for what was happening to the characters. For sheer curiosity, I would like to know how to annunciate the characters names. The end of the book was unexpected and I really enjoyed it; thank you for not giving me the same old over-played happily-ever-after. Without giving anything away, I feel that this story could be one of many, the characters have room to grow and I can't wait to meet more of their aquaintances. Look for Ben Bragdon novels, he shines.

An interesting take on a little known historical time period. Built on the classic struggles of humanity, Bragdon relates the tale of best friends as they battle to survive and learn to play in the political arena with a subplot of romance and deceit. A slow read at first due to the elevated writing style; nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the ironic twist at the end.
Very well written storyline containing.g intriguing historical references. Bragdon adds just enough romance to peak the hopes of love mingled with detailed battle scenes. I thoroughly enjoyed the surprise ending!
